The 'Rockstar' Of Bollywood Soundtracks
Imtiaz Ali released ‘Rockstar’ 12 years ago, starring Ranbir Kapoor as the protagonist Jordan. AR Rahman’s music, Irshad Kamil’s lyrics, Mohit Chauhan’s singing and everything else to do with this film is simply brilliant.
On the film’s 10th anniversary in 2021, Rahman shared an interesting story of how ‘Naadan Parinde’ came to be.
In Kashmir, Rahman sought feedback on the film’s music. Everyone was a fan; except Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor.
Rahman expected such a reaction. When asked if he liked any song, Imtiaz Ali conveyed that Rishi Kapoor “didn’t understand anything.”
Rahman immediately paused production and returned to the drawing board.
“It was very important to get that comment, which changed my outlook towards this song.”
The soundtrack underwent a metamorphosis, and “Nadaan Parinde” was born.
The album spans diverse genres, from Sufi Qawwali to Rock Anthems. Irshad Kamil’s poetic lyrics superbly express Jordan’s emotions, allowing listeners to follow his character development and his state of mind through the music alone.
‘Phir Se Udd Chala’ captures Jordan’s journey, a poignant reflection on love lost, propelling him into the tumultuous realm of musical fame.
‘Kun Faaya Kun’ set against the backdrop of Nizamuddin Dargah represents a transformative phase where Ustad Jameel Khan recognizes Jordan’s talent.
‘Meri Bebasi Ka Bayaan Hai’ echoes the forbidden love between Jordan and Heer in the intense rock ballad “Aur Ho.”; whereas ‘Sadda Haq,’ embodies Jordan’s anger and frustration upon his return to India. It marks a crescendo of angst after Heer’s rejection, plunging Jordan into a life of emptiness.
“The Dichotomy of Fame,” often overlooked, reflects the paradox between the yearning for fame and the overwhelming experience of love.
“Nadaan Parindey” – Jordan’s spiritual redemption, is a desperate call for a bygone, carefree Jordan, symbolizing the irreversible toll of fame and love.
The soul of the film lies in ‘Jo Bhi Mein,’ highlighting different facets of Jordan’s life; stemming from both intentional decisions and circumstances beyond his control
