You’ve probably heard about Sonos but are unsure about their products, what they are, and their capabilities. In this guide we will dive into everything about Sonos and their products.

Sonos is a modern alternative to standard HiFi systems, which take up a considerable amount of space and do not take advantage of today's technology. If you want to be able to play music in multiple rooms or simply want the best sound with complete freedom, Sonos is the current industry leader.

Sonos has pioneered multi room technology, which lets you play different songs in different rooms at the same time, the same music in all rooms at the same time, or only a number of songs at the same time.

Sonos was founded by John MacFarlane, Trung Mai, Thomas Cullen, and Craig Shelburne in Santa Barbara, California. The aim was simple: help music lovers play any song from any room in their homes. This was a bold vision at the time. It's no surprise that companies like Amazon, Bose, Audio Pro, Denon, LG, and Google have since got in on the act.

How does Sonos Work?

Sonos uses your WiFi to play music from Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music, among other streaming services, but you can also stream radio, podcasts, and audiobooks to your speaker. Sonos also allows for native app control. This means that you will be able to control your speakers through your favorite music app. If you prefer your current music app and don't want to be limited by the Sonos app, this is a neat feature. Native app control is currently available for Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, and Audible, and will soon support more streaming apps.

Sonos recently announced that it will support Apple Music's Spatial Audio feature. So, if you have an Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, or Tidal subscription, you can listen to Dolby Atmos spatial audio tracks with Sonos speakers if you have a Sonos Era 300, Sonos Arc, or Sonos Beam (Gen 2).

Sonos only requires power and a WiFi network or an ethernet connection to work, and the rest is handled by the free Sonos app, which is available on mobile devices, tablets, and PCs.

The Sonos app will require you to connect to your WiFi network, just like any other device in your home, such as a laptop or mobile phone. The setup is straightforward and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

You can assign a room name to your device, such as ‘Living Room’ or ‘Bed Room’ and it will appear in the app under "Rooms." This can be done for any Sonos speaker you have.

Sonos saved the Bluetooth option for its outdoor portable speakers, the Sonos Move and Sonos Roam. When you're at home, WiFi is a better choice for several reasons, including not interrupting your music when you get a notification, not being limited in range, and not compressing the sound.

The Sonos S2 app is used to control your Sonos System. It’s important to keep in mind that only products released after May 2020 are compatible with the S2 app. In case you have older Sonos products, you can check out their website for more information on how to configure a system with older and newer products.

Sonos S2 App:

The Sonos S2 App has a variety of features, including:

Discovering New Music:
You can explore the Sonos Radio, and browse for the music you like.

Play Music Anywhere:
You can group rooms to play the same music everywhere or listen to different music in each room.

Music & Voice Services:
You can keep your music together and add convenient voice commands.

Playlists:
You can create playlists of your favorite music to listen to them at any time.

Sonos and Vinyl:

Let’s talk about Vinyl & Sonos. Does Sonos work with Vinyl? Absolutely. Let’s say you enjoy the convenience of streaming music on Sonos but you also want to listen to the 'real feel' of music on vinyl. If that’s the case, let’s show you how to connect your turntable to Sonos devices.

You'll need at least one Sonos device with line-in connections. The Sonos Five, Sonos Port, and the Sonos Amp all feature line-in connections. Some older Sonos models also include line-in connections: Sonos Play:5 Gen 1 & 2, Sonos Connect & Sonos Connect: Amp.

If you already own a turntable and want to use it with your Sonos system, you should check if it has a built-in preamp. This will be specified by the manufacturer. If it features a preamp, you can connect it straight to any of the mentioned Sonos devices. If your turntable does not come with a built-in preamp, you will need to purchase one for it to work with Sonos.

You can also share audio with any Sonos devices in your system, including those without a line-in input, by grouping them to your rooms or Sonos devices.

Why Should I Choose Sonos?

Here's a few reasons why Sonos might be right for you.

MultiRoom

You can pair speakers together to play the same music simultaneously in multiple rooms using the Sonos app, or you can play different music in each room. This feature is ideal for social events, entertaining guests, or moving around your home while listening to your favorite music.

Flexibility in Different Spaces:

Regardless of whether you live in a small flat or a big mansion, Sonos enables you to personalize your audio configuration that meets your requirements. You can easily expand your system over time to cover other rooms and locations thanks to the wide range of speakers, soundbars, and subwoofers that are available. The Sonos ecosystem is created with modularity in mind

Compatibility with existing audio equipment:

Sonos offers good compatibility possibilities. You can integrate your current audio or home theater system into the Sonos ecosystem using Sonos Connect. This means you are free to use your preferred speakers or amplifiers while still taking advantage of all the features of Sonos, including wireless streaming and multi-room synchronization.

Voice Assistants:

You can use voice commands to control your whole Sonos system by pairing a suitable smart speaker, such as the Sonos One, Sonos Beam, or Sonos Arc. This includes playing music, changing the volume, skipping tracks, and even managing other smart home appliances. The hands-free operation of your Sonos system is made possible with Amazon Alexa & Google Assistant.
