A Day At The Record Store + Black Sabbath Listening Session
Black Sabbath, formed in Birmingham, England in 1968, is an iconic heavy metal band that laid the foundation for the entire genre. In 1968, while under the name Earth, the band faced a conflict with another group using the same name.
As a result, they decided to change their name; inspired by a 1963 horror film titled "Black Sabbath".With the name change, Black Sabbath started incorporating darker, heavier sounds into their music, which led to the creation of the distinct heavy metal style that would become their trademark.
The band released their debut self-titled album in 1970 giving birth to heavy metal as a genre; however, it was their second album 'Paranoid', released in the same year catapulted them into mainstream success.
With its sludgy guitar tones and contemplative lyrics, their third album 'Master of Reality' laid the groundwork for other sub-genres of metal music such as doom, sludge and stoner metal.
Join us this Saturday (August 26th) at our Mahim store for a #BlackSabbath listening session from 4 PM to 6 PM.Also, starting at 11 AM, we're hosting #ADayAtTheRecordStore; Music on vinyl, great coffee and a chance to catch up with fellow vinylheads from the city! Don't miss 🤘

View RecapInternational Blues Music Day: Saturday Night Blues at Records.Coffee (Bandra)
Blues music emerged in the African-American communities of the Southern United States in the late 19th century. It served as a poignant outlet for expressing their feelings, struggles, and aspirations, rooted in the experience of hardship and sorrow.
The genre's origins can be traced back to spirituals, work songs, and field hollers, which evolved into the distinctive 12-bar blues structure.
Blues music is known for its soulful vocals and the use of instruments like guitar, harmonica, and piano, touching on themes of heartbreak, loss, loneliness, injustice, resilience, and hope.
In the early 20th century, blues found its way into recording studios, with artists like W.C. Handy, Bessie Smith, and Robert Johnson popularizing the genre.
It significantly influenced other genres such as jazz, rock 'n' roll, and rhythm and blues.
The blues reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, with electrified instruments and amplification creating a bolder and more versatile sound.
Legends like Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Howlin' Wolf brought the blues to the mainstream and inspired musicians worldwide.
International Blues Music Day (IBMD) was initiated on August 17, 2011, through an online petition. It gained massive support from blues enthusiasts, musicians, celebrities, and promoters, leading to the establishment of an annual celebration on the first Saturday in August.
The initiative was the brainchild of blues musician Johnny Childs who serves as the President of the NYC Blues Society.
IBMD brings together blues enthusiasts, musicians, and communities worldwide, hosting concerts, workshops, and educational programs.
We are celebrating #InternationalBluesMusicDay this Saturday (5th August) at Records.Coffee in Bandra.
Enjoy Saturday night blues with jazz, soul and blues classics on records and special offers on cocktails. 7 PM onwards.

View RecapInternational Beer Day: Beer, Records and a Quiz | Hapi Beer x Bombay Quiz Club x TRC
The history of beer stretches back to ancient civilizations as far back as 5,000 BCE in Mesopotamia. It is believed that early humans stumbled upon the fermentation process accidentally when grains got wet and started to ferment, producing a mildly intoxicating beverage.
As civilizations developed, so did the techniques of brewing beer. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all had their versions of beer; often tying it to religious rituals and social gatherings. In the Middle Ages, monasteries became centers of brewing expertise, with monks refining brewing techniques and experimenting with new ingredients.
The Industrial Revolution marked a major turning point in beer production with the advent of mechanization and refrigeration. Brewing shifted from small-scale, local operations to large breweries capable of mass production and distribution.
In recent times, the craft beer movement has taken the world by storm. Craft brewers emphasize traditional methods, unique flavors, and quality ingredients.
This resurgence has led to an explosion of innovative beer styles and tastes, appealing to a wide range of beer enthusiasts.Today, beer has become a global phenomenon, deeply embedded in cultures worldwide.
From ancient fermentation discoveries to modern craft brewing, the evolution of beer continues, ensuring its place as a beloved and culturally significant beverage.
International Beer Day is a celebration on the first Friday of every August founded in 2007 in Santa Cruz, California by Jesse Avshalomov.
On Friday, 4th August, we are celebrating International Beer Day at Hapi Beer (Bandra) from 4 PM onwards. Beer, Records and A Quiz. Also, join us for a session on the history of Beer by Dhaval Nagda and Pradip Raskar (Brewmasters); and grab special discounts on food and beverage!

View RecapFree Sampling Workshop by Owlist + Access to over 600 EPs For Sampling Music
Sampling is an essential part of hip-hop culture. It is a process of taking snippets of pre-existing audio recordings and incorporating them into new compositions.
Sampling originated in the 70s when DJs in the Bronx, like DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa started manipulating vinyl records to produce fresh sounds during block parties.
Over the years, sampling has enabled artists to honor their musical influences, reuse familiar sounds, and create intricate sound collages that listeners can relate to.
J Dilla, DJ Premier, Madlib, The RZA, Q-Tip, Pharrell, Timbaland, and Kanye West are among the legendary producers who have revolutionized sampling in hip-hop.
On 1st July, Saturday, we are hosting a Sampling Workshop where Owlist will take you through the process of sampling music and making a beat from a Bollywood sample on the spot. 2 PM onwards at Records.Coffee in Pali Hill, Bandra.
Also, you can sample music from a collection of over 600 EPs for free using the provided Numark PT-01 scratch; only needing to bring your laptop.

No watch brand has had a bigger impact on popular culture than Seiko. From appearing in iconic films like Apocalypse Now, Moonraker (James Bond), Alien to being the official timekeeper for major sporting events like the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Formula 1 and also being the first chronograph to go into space - the brand is almost instantly recognizable anywhere in the world.
It's hard to believe that all of this began 141 years ago at a small watchmaking shop in Japan with Kintaro Hattori, a young Japanese man who was fascinated and obsessed with clocks.
Even though Japan was rapidly modernizing in the 19th century, clocks were still a rarity. He studied endlessly for days to study the mechanisms of clocks, and at 21 he opened his own small shop in 1881.
After gaining experience, Hattori established Seikosha (house of precision) in 1892, a factory which was dedicated to the production of wall clocks.
A few years later Kintaro opened a huge watchmaking store in Tokyo’s thriving Ginza district. Hattori’s hard work would finally paid off in 1913 as he successfully created Japan’s first wristwatch “The Laurel”. His dreams of becoming a world-renowned watchmaker were finally coming true.
Unfortunately in 1923, The Great Kantō earthquake turned Tokyo into shambles completely damaging the city, Hattori’s store, factory, and machinery. All of Hattori’s dreams were lying in the rubble of the aftermath collecting dust.
Yet he was undaunted by the chaos that the earthquake had left behind, and he was determined to begin again.
His first step was to offer replacements to all those who had lost their watches in the earthquake; it was his way of resuming normalcy. So one year after the Earthquake he introduced a brand new wristwatch, heralding the start of a new era - the first to bear the name "Seiko"
Ever since, Seiko has become one of the biggest brands in the watch industry with a revenue of over 200 billion.
We are hosting India's First Seiko Club Meet on 17th June at Records.Coffee (Bandra) from 1 PM to 6 PM. Bring your Seikos and meet fellow collectors.

View RecapJoni Mitchell - Vinyl Listening Session | Curated by Anushree Majumdar
“The beauty as a listener is you have an option. Either you can see yourself and your humanity in the songs, which is what I’m trying to do for listeners. Or you can say, ‘That’s the way she is’ and equate the songs with me. The richest way, the way to get the most out of it, is to see yourself in it. The ones that do, whether they call it autobiographical or not, are getting it.” Blue, Joni Mitchell’s fourth studio album, was released on June 22, 1971, and since then, it has become the gold standard in “confessional” songwriting – something the Canadian singer-songwriter is not too pleased about. There is a singular kind of artistry in the composition of the album, that often is forced to play second fiddle to Mitchell’s lyrics, lauded for their remarkable honesty and vulnerability. Featuring songs written for a number of fellow musicians and transient paramours, Blue chronicles longing and loss while walking the thin line between remembrance and nostalgia. But the album is so much more about Mitchell herself than it is about any man. Blue is an act of self-knowledge, which in turn, might just develop into self-love. With Blue, Mitchell also wanted to shake off the reputation she’d gained as a folk singer – she knew she was much more than that, and she needed the world to know it. Every song on this album is a postcard from a different soundscape, and listeners are invited to follow the paths Mitchell took while writing it, both literally and metaphorically. The result is an audacious exploration of the self as a musician, a writer, a woman, and most of all, an intrepid lover.

A saxophone solo. A glass of warming liquor. Dimmed lights. Some things naturally go together; and when it comes to drinking whiskey, jazz is often not far from our minds.
Referred to as the Jazz Age by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Roaring 20s were a period marked by music, indulgence, and the ongoing struggle of African Americans to establish their position in society. Jazz music became a symbol of this movement. Despite the abolition of slavery, Black individuals continued to face injustices and inequalities. It was from this struggle that jazz emerged, regarded by many as America's first genuine art form. Evolving from the ragtime music of the time, jazz provided the Black community with a voice and became an integral part of the Harlem Renaissance. It perfectly complemented the underground culture of whiskey drinking during Prohibition.
White patrons frequented jazz clubs to listen to African American performers like Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Duke Ellington. Sadly, while Black musicians could perform in these clubs, they were not always permitted to be patrons themselves.Alongside the music, whiskey flowed, and many artists indulged in its pleasures. Jazz even had its own drinking songs. Just before the 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition, Bessie Smith crooned one of jazz's renowned drinking songs in November 1933, titled "Gimme a Pigfoot"
Every year, the third Saturday in May is celebrated globally as World Whiskey Day; encouraging enthusiasts to savor a dram and honor the "water of life."We are celebrating #WorldWhiskeyDay this Saturday at Veranda Rooftop; Whiskey, Barbecue and Jazz on Vinyl.

View RecapQueen: Echoing Through Eternity - Vinyl Listening Session Hosted by Vedant Naik
Queen's origins can be traced back to Smile, a band founded in 1968 by Brian May and Roger Taylor, with Tim Staffell as the vocalist. When Staffell left to join another band, Freddie Mercury, a devoted Smile fan, joined May and Taylor, leading to the formation of Queen. Thus, Smile transitioned into Queen, a name suggested by Mercury himself.
They released their debut self-titled album, "Queen" in 1973 featuring almost every one of Queen's signatures; from Freddie Mercury's intense harmonies to Brian May's rich, orchestral guitar overdubs and the suite-like structures of "Great King Rat."
In 1975, Queen unleashed their magnum opus, "Bohemian Rhapsody," as the lead single for their next album, "A Night at the Opera." The epic composition mesmerized listeners and spent an incredible 18 months at the top of the UK charts. In the following years, they released "Hot Space" in 1982, "The Works" in 1984, and "A Kind of Magic" in 1986. In 1987, there were rumors about Freddie Mercury's AIDS diagnosis, initially denied by the band, but Mercury confirmed it in 1991 and called for support in his battle against the disease. Sadly, Mercury passed away on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45. Following Mercury's death, a greatest hits album was released, and a commemorative concert took place.

View RecapThe String Maestros - Vinyl Listening Session Hosted by Bhakti Thakoor
The string instruments have been an integral part of Indian classical music, both Hindustani and Carnatic. The earliest mention of string instruments and their classification is found in The Bharata’s Natyashastra (dated between 200 BCE and 200 CE). They are referred to as Tantu Vadya. In this category of instruments, the sound is produced by the strings' vibration through plucking, bowing, or hammering.
The listening session curated by Ms. Bhakti Thakoor around the string instruments is an attempt to translate the theoretical classification of these instruments into a musical experience. It identifies one instrument from each sub-classification: Sitar (fretted), Sarod (non-fretted), Sarangi, and Santoor.

We just lost another Jazz royalty. Shorter was from a generation that learned firsthand from some of the greatest saxophonists of all time. He came to prominence in the late 50s as a member - and the primary composer for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
In the 60s Shorter joined Miles Davis’ second great quintet. He was amongst the few composers Miles would sometimes record without making changes - and that should tell you where he stands in Jazz history. He was a deliberate player like so many composers - musicians are. His music evolved from the muscular, straight ahead bop of the Messengers, to a more emotional expression with Davis.
He eventually played on the seminal Bitches Brew.
He switched from the Tenor to the Soprano in the 70s. Shorter eventually went on to form the Jazz Rock Fusion band Weather Report with Joe Zawinul.
