Yaadon Ki Baarat: A Tale Of Love, Loss and Music
Released in 1973, Yaadon Ki Baarat is a story of three brothers who were separated in their childhood and reunited after many years. But what sets the film apart from other Bollywood movies is its unforgettable soundtrack, composed by the legendary R. D. Burman.
Burman was a master at blending different genres of music and creating magic, and his compositions in Yaadon Ki Baarat were no different. The opening song "Yaadon Ki Baarat" sets the tone for the movie. Sung by Lata Mangeshkar, it captures the essence of the film and is picturized on a happy family gathering, which turns tragic as the three brothers witness the murder of their parents.
"Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko" sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi is one of the most famous songs from the movie. It's a perfect blend of rock n roll and Indian classical music, with the opening riff being one of the most recognizable tunes in Bollywood history.
Another famous song from the movie is "Lekar Hum Deewana Dil". Sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle and picturized by Tariq Khan and Neetu Singh; it is a perfect example of how RD blended different genres of music to create magic. The song has a rock and roll influence, with the use of electric guitar and drums, but also has a touch of Indian classical music.
The soundtrack of Yaadon Ki Baarat gained international fame, with the songs being a hit in the UK and the USA and played in clubs and parties. It is also believed to be the first Indian album to be released on a compact disc (CD) in the USA in 1987 and one of the first Indian albums to be remixed and released in the UK as a dance album.
The story behind the making of the soundtrack is also an interesting one. R. D. Burman was inspired by the music of Elvis Presley and incorporated elements of rock n roll in his compositions. He used a Moog synthesizer for the first time in Indian music in the song "Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko", which was a groundbreaking step in Indian music and set a trend for years to come.
The music of Yaadon Ki Baarat remains a classic and continues to be loved by fans even after almost five decades of its release.
