David Fincher's Music Video Era
·
·
Before entering the world of feature films, David Fincher directed his debut music video for Rick Springfield in 1984.
Between 1984 and 2013, Fincher directed over 50 iconic music videos, collaborating with artists like Paula Abdul, George Michael, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails and Madonna.
The transition from music videos to feature films, with Alien 3 releasing in 1992, was a major event in Fincher’s career. However, it’s the hidden nuances of his early professional life, particularly his association with Madonna, that add an interesting layer to his narrative.
Madonna found a creative partner in Fincher. The first of these collaborations was “Express Yourself” in 1989, inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.
They were more than just colleagues, briefly involved romantically, which was kept discreet.
The intricacies of their connection became more evident during the production of “Oh Father” later in 1989. The video, directed by Fincher, unfolded as a loosely autobiographical piece, delving into Madonna’s relationship with her father and the loss of her mother.
Amidst the glamour of Madonna’s Blond Ambition World Tour, a falling out occurred, leading to Fincher being replaced for the documentary “Truth or Dare.” This marked a turning point, both professionally and personally.
During this period, David Fincher directed music videos for Aerosmith’s “Janie’s Got A Gun” , Don Henley’s “The End of the Innocence” and Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.”
Yet, their paths would cross again in the early ‘90s when Madonna sought Fincher to direct the music video for “Bad Girl.”
This was also the time when Fincher directed the two music videos for Billy Idol and the music video for “Who Is It?” by Michael Jackson
Bad Girl’s release in February 1993 coincided with Madonna’s public acknowledgment of their unique connection, describing a “silent language” between them.
In the late 90s, Fincher continued to direct music videos for bands like The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Nine Inch Nails.
David Fincher also directed the music video for Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z’s “Suit & Tie” released in 2013
