These quirks are generally a kind of a publicity gimmick done to attract attention and also add creativity to the usual manner of things.
Over the period of time, these offbeat LPs become music memorabilia just like famous guitars, drum sets or even lyrics.
From saw blade, marshmallow and ice records to the limited edition vinyls by Third Man Records, there are so many bizarre and avant-garde decks available these days.
To top this off, we have got a vinyl record story for you that's one of its kind. ‘And Vinyly’ a British company presses ashes on vinyl records to give the experience of life ‘beyond the groove’.
This is a great way of immortalising the souls of your loved ones by creating their music memorabilia.
The consumption of vinyl in the last 25 years has only gone up. Naturally, somewhere along the way people have felt the need to experiment and up their vinyl game to a whole new level with glow in the dark, smokable or edible records. Here are 5 unique and weird vinyl records that will blow your mind.
5. DRAM’s Broccoli:
Unlike the conventional circular record, this vinyl is pressed in the shape of a broccoli getting high on little baby broccolis. The concept behind it roots from the lyrics of the single, “All she want to do is smoke that broccoli.” Although this record isn't the most unusual it is definitely music memorabilia that stoners hold close to their hearts.
4. Chocolate Records:
French DJ Breakbot released a special limited chocolate edition of his LP ‘By Your Side’. Only 120 12” chocolate records were made which were supposed to be eaten after playing it once.
Another musician Chilly Gonzales also launched 100 7” copies of his single ‘Working Together' that were made of chocolate.
These records however could be played 4 to 5 times before they ruined the deck. The sound is definitely something that is compromised in these records.
3. Triple Decker Record:
The next weird vinyl record on the list is by the alternative rock band Dead Weather. Jack White’s ‘Third Man Records’ came up with a design for a triple decker record for their single 'Blue Blood Blues’. It had a 7” record sandwiched inside the 12” vinyl. The outer record needed to be cut open to listen to the inner one which had a hidden track. It was a limited edition vinyl and only 300 units were released.
2. RRR 500:
The vinyl record story behind this LP originates from the concept of locked grooves and how they have looping audio within them causing infinite loops. Godspeed You Black Emperor’s ‘F# A# Infinity’ and Beatles’ ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ had these. RRRecords launched the RRR 500 with 500 locked grooves and 500 bands. This made it literally impossible for you to manually select a song. Artists like Miles Davis and Sonic Youth were included in this.
1. X-Ray Records:
X-ray records or ‘Vinyl on Ribs’ or ‘Jazz on Bones’ is a truly fascinating vinyl record story which is quite popular in the history of Soviet Russia.
During the 1950-60s a black market for smuggling and distribution of records emerged in Russia since many artists including Elvis, The Rolling Stones and Ella Fitzgerald were banned there.
These LPs were created by using medical x-rays from hospital trash. The discs were 7” and the center hole was made using a cigarette. The sound quality was terrible but they were cheap and could be played 5-10 times.
The list for all the strangest vinyl records ever made is a never ending one. Considering the resale value these records can gather with time, you should start investing in one today itself. Also finding one of these antiques isn't very easy so better start looking for them soon!
