The Loves, Losses and Legend of Asha Bhosle
It’s the 1960s. Asha Bhosle finds herself at the top of the pops, giving some competition to her sister Lata Mangeshkar. Humraaz, Gumraah, Waqt emerge as classic, superhit soundtracks. And one day in the studio, she spots a superfan who asks her for an autograph.
That superfan was was none other than the "Music Scientist", the King of Bollywood Music — R. D. Burman. They collaborate; they perform together; they grow closer by the day. But will Asha give love a second chance? When the spectres of her first love were still haunting her.
Flashback to 1949 - 16-year-old Asha Mangeshkar fell in love with sister Lata's secretary Ganpatrao Bhosle. They married, but the Mangeshkar sisters felt cross. Things did get better a few years later, with the birth of Asha's first child Hemant (named after Hemant Kumar).
But Ganpatrao was greedy. He wanted more money and fame from Asha and felt threatened by Lata's success. Things got abusive, and Asha and the three kids walked out in 1960.
Fast forward to 1980 - Asha and R. D. Burman finally decide to get married. It's the second marriage for both, and they are happy!
The 80s bring out the best and the worst times for Burman. Peaking with Asha in Ijaazat (1986), Burman's career graph begins to ebb in the middle of a disco-romance era. Everyone deserts him. Aloof, he takes to alcohol and smoking. Asha and R. D. sadly separate but remain best friends.
1994 - Pancham is taken unwell and dies of a heart attack, leaving Asha devastated. But she must continue singing. The show must go on! And so must life. It goes on, katra, katra.
