Shakti's "This Moment" Wins Best Global Music Album
Shakti secured the prestigious Best Global Music Album award at the 2024 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles for “This Moment,” marking their triumphant return after 46 years.
Originally known as “Turiyananda Sangit,” the fusion group, founded in 1973 by British guitarist John McLaughlin, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, and percussionist Vikku Vinayakram, saw a revival in 2020 with McLaughlin, Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V. Selvaganesh, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan.
Their Grammy win, shared with Mahadevan, Selvaganesh, and Rajagopalan, not only celebrates Shakti’s comeback but also highlights Zakir Hussain’s additional triumph for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album with “As We Speak.”
The latter project, an Indo-Western jazz collaboration with Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and flutist Rakesh Chaurasia, clinched another Grammy for Best Global Music Performance with their mesmerizing track “Pashto.”
The group’s acceptance speeches reflected gratitude, with Mahadevan expressing thanks to family, friends, and India, dedicating the award to his wife, while Rajagopalan acknowledged the Recording Academy’s recognition.
Despite Shakti’s relative obscurity among younger audiences due to their prolonged hiatus, the Grammy recognition and a recent 50th-anniversary world tour position them for a potential global resurgence.
“This Moment,” released on June 30, features eight tracks that triumphed over notable contenders like Burna Boy and Davido.
Chaurasia, reflecting on the double victory, expressed immense pride, emphasizing the achievements as a significant moment for Indian talent.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Shakti, lauding their “phenomenal success” as a testament to their exceptional talent and dedication.
He highlighted the awards as an inspiration for the new generation of artists to dream big and excel in the realm of music.
The dual Grammy triumphs underscore the incredible impact of Shakti and Zakir Hussain on the global music stage, marking a momentous chapter in Indian music.
