RTJ4: The Modern Political Rap Album
When your album opens with the lyrics like “Scandals bliss when you puttin’ villiains in charge of sh*t, all of us targeted, all we doin’ is arguin’”, it should give you a very good idea of what exactly this album is going to be.
Run The Jewels is not afraid to wage war against institutionalization, and they have their own way of doing it. The rap duo of Killer Mike & El-P have always been vocal of police brutality, the legal system and everything that’s wrong in the United States, but they will do it while you rage in a huge moshpit full of drunk folks in Pitchfork’s Music Festival.
They will campaign for Bernie Sanders, but also have a music video mocking the politicians. Run The Jewels have a voice, a unique voice, and they know how to make it heard, effectively.
After success of first three installments of Run The Jewels album, the fourth addition of their impeccable discography was aimed to be a huge one. Now signed to BMG, RTJ4 was just an explosive record as it’s predecessors, with social commentary and chaotic production, only with slight touch of mainstream appeal.
Production credits included the legendary DJ Premier adding his magical scratches to the single “Oo La La”, while Pharrell Williams and 2 Chainz brought their swagger to “JU$T” & “Out of Sight” respectively.
RTJ4 ended up receiving a widespread acclaim from critics and listeners alike, seemingly satisfied with Run the Jewels’ urge to raise their voice against the system without compromising on their sound.
