Long before the popularity of the term World Music, it was Ravi Shankar’s first US visit as a soloist which helped the international audiences become aware of Indian Classical Music.
The tour also drew jazz performers, critics, and listeners, who saw parallels between Shankar's music and jazz.
He also got favorable responses from the US media, and various events were held in his honor across the country.
The tour is widely considered a major milestone in spreading the popularity of Indian Classical music internationally.

Pandit continued to surpass many of such milestones throughout his life.
In 1967, Harrison invited Shankar to play at the Monterey Pop Festival, which took place in Monterey, California from June 16 to 18, 1967.
The festival was planned in just seven weeks by John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas and featured the Jimi Hendrix Experience's first major US appearance and Shankar's first pop festival experience.

Pandit also performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and became one of the only Indians to play at the festival along with Ustad Alla Rakha and Maya Kulkarni.
