Ramsay Brothers: The Pioneers Of Indian Horror
When it comes to Horror there is no doubt that the Ramsay brothers are the undisputed kings of the genre.
Even though there are many horror films that have come out in recent years, the one name that always comes to mind is Ramsay brothers.
The word “Ramsay” was first heard at the Radio and Electric company in Karachi, a radio shop owned by Fatehchand U. Ramsinghani.
A name his British clients had difficulty in pronouncing so they gave him a new name, one that would change his life forever.
After the partition Fatechand moved to Mumbai, where he saw the growth of low budget films backed by independent investors and businessmen as an opportunity to get into film production with his sons Kumar, Tulsi, Shyam, Keshu, Kiran, Gangu and Arjun.
While they found success with films like Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh (1954) and Rustom Sahab (1963), the family faced a major setback with the failure of Ek nanhi munni ladki thi(1970),a major film starring Prithviraj Kapoor and Shatrugan Sinha.
However, Tulsi and Shyam noticed in a screening of the film that the audience was shocked to see Prithviraj Kapoor in grotesque full body costume, they were scared beyond belief.
That’s when they decided to make their first horror film Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche (1972).The film eventually becoming a sleeper hit at the box office, officially establishing the Ramsay brothers.
The Ramsay Brothers continued to deliver horror classics like Veerana (1988), Purana Mandir (1984), Bandh Darwaza (1990) Purani Haveli (1989) and of course the zee horror show (1993).
Not only Ramsay Brothers have played a pivotal role in the development of the independent, low budget horror movie industry, but they have also become an important part of popular culture.
