In India, rooftops hold a cherished place in the hearts of the people, serving as versatile spaces for family gatherings, quiet moments, and an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Rooftops have seamlessly woven themselves into the cultural fabric of India, acting as extensions of our homes and communal spaces.
Within this cultural context, the Nisarga Art Hub in Ernakulam, Kerala, emerges as a visionary project, redefining the essence of rooftops and transforming them into dynamic amphitheatres.
The Nisarga Art Hub is designed by architects Vinu Daniel, Oshin Mariam Varughese,
Subhrodipta Ghosh, and Rosh V Saji - for a family of musicians Vishnudev K.S and his wife Lakshmi V who are Carnatic vocalists and their children Mayura and Maanav.
Through the Nisarga Art Hub, Vishnu and Lakshmi aim to bring the art community together,
providing a space for interaction and immersion in art and culture.
Nestled against the serene backdrop of a traditional Kerala paddy field, this project is a celebration of the region’s rich cultural heritage. It draws inspiration from the iconic Kerala roofs, known for their distinctive sloping tiled surfaces offering impeccable insulation and temperature control.
Recognizing the dim interiors within these structures, the architects at Wallmakers ingeniously integrated skylights, allowing natural light to permeate the space and imbue it with an ethereal ambience.
Designed with a keen sense of spatial harmony, the roof’s 35° angle ingeniously aligns with the 30° slope of an Open-Air Amphitheater. This design choice transforms the skylights into functional seating areas for the audience, creating a unique and flexible space for cultural events and gatherings.
Furthermore, the hub’s entrance is deliberately segregated to ensure uninterrupted activities above, opening into a spacious living area that offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding paddy fields.
This celebration of Kerala’s cultural traditions provides a modern space for community interaction and cultural events, marking a significant contribution to the architectural landscape.
