Hate5six: How an Indian American filmographer brought hardcore to the world
There is no denying that metalcore is very popular in the metal scene in India.
Bands like Bhayanak maut, Scribe, Reverse polarity and Chronic Xorn have always enthralled Indian fans, inspiring them to create some of the most brutal mosh pits at live shows.
It’s really peculiar than that the roots of the genre have been relatively unknown, until now.
It was the late 90s/early 2000’s, in those days elite music fans were collecting Video tapes of live footage of bands and trading it amongst each other.
Among those fans was one who believed that these tapes are not just for the elite and should be made available to all, thus hate5six was born.
A website and YouTube channel started by Indian American filmmaker Sunny Singh, whose main motive is to archive and document live music in America, with special emphasis on punk and hardcore.
Over the years Sunny Singh has filmed and archived performances from bands all over the world, from veterans like the Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, and Madball, to new legends like Code Orange, Turnstile, Nails, and Harm’s way.
Hate5six is an extremely important part of punk and hardcore. Not only has Sunny been successful in documenting the history of the genre as he intended, but he has also shared it with the world.
Hardcore has never been more popular in India, with new fans finding out about the roots of the genre every day.
