Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson: How Scandinavian History Inspired One Of The Biggest Advancements In Technology
The Vikings were a seafaring people from the late 8th to early 11th century. They were known for their naval abilities. As skilled craftsmen and traders, their sophisticated shipbuilding technology allowed them to travel great distances and establish settlements in new lands.
Some of their most notable achievements include their exploration of the North Atlantic and their establishment of the first European settlements in North America. While the Vikings have many achievements under their belt, their contribution to modern technology is probably the most important.
Harald Gormsson was a key figure in the formation of modern-day Denmark. He worked extensively and made efforts to unite the Viking tribes and convert them to Christianity, thereby, laying the groundwork for a more cohesive and peaceful society. However, it's not just his political accomplishments that earned him a place in history.
It's also the unique way he got his nickname. According to legend, Harold had a dead tooth that was of a dark blue colour, thereby earning him the nickname 'Blåtand' (Bluetooth) in Danish.
The moniker was adopted, in 1994, as the name of the wireless technology that allowed devices to communicate with each other. Developed by a group of engineers at Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications company, Bluetooth was named to represent Harald’s ability to unite and communicate between different Viking tribes during his reign, just as the technology could communicate between PCs and cellular devices.
The logo for Bluetooth was made by merging King Harald’s initials from Scandinavian runes (H (ᚼ) and B (ᛒ)) or the “Bind Rune” on a blue background.
Today, Bluetooth can be found in almost all modern electronic devices. King Harald ‘Bluetooth’ Gormsson’s name lives on in the technology that has revolutionized the way we communicate and connect with each other.
