Great Indian Rock: India’s First Major Rock/Metal Festival

RSJ (Rock Street Journal) has played a huge role is establishing the Rock and Metal scene in India. At the very heart of which has been their Great Indian Rock festival, which was probably every metalhead and rock lovers first exposure to live rock music in the country.
Starting in 1997 as a two-day festival in Kolkata, GIR quickly travelled all over the country with editions in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Shillong.
Over the years GIR has given us so many great moments, from iconic performances by national legends like Them clones, Parikrama, Scribe, Bhayanak Maut and Joint family, to major international acts like Enslaved, Freak Kitchen, Satyricon and of course the all mighty Meshuggah.
There is no doubt that the Great Indian Rock has been a huge influence on today’s big festivals like Nh7 and Ziro.
Even though those are bigger in scale, with multiple artists on different stages, the small, close-knit community like feeling is what made GIR special.
