Did Yoko Ono Break The Beatles ?
The Beatles have had a major impact on the music that we listen to today. While some people may have their favourite “Beatle” the band as a whole is universally loved and respected by music fans all over the world, the same cannot be said for Yoko Ono who has been met with polarizing reactions from fans everywhere.
Yoko Ono was a renowned performance artist who married John Lennon in 1969. The beatles broke up a year after their marriage. For many years fans have looked at Yoko Ono with aversion, blaming her for creating a divide between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, needlessly interfering in the recording sessions and trying to take control. Most considered Yoko to be a manipulative woman who used the band for her own benefit. She was often labelled as "the dragon lady".
In recent times however, public opinion towards Yoko seems to be changing for the better, mostly due to the documentary TV series “Get Back” (2021) in which Yoko was seen knitting and cutting newspaper clips while the Beatles were making their final Masterpiece “Let it be” (1971), Yoko never appears to be meddling with the band which seems to be quite a contrast to what we’ve been made to believe of her in the past.
According to a 2004 book “John Lennon Imagined: Cultural History of a Rock Star”, fans would often crowd up at the Beatles company headquarters in London calling Ono names like, “Nip”, “Jap”, “Chink”, forcing her to go back to her own country.
Ono seemed unbothered by the insults, when asked how she felt about "the dragon lady" she said she felt "honoured", "the dragon is a very powerful, mythical animal . . . well, probably they think I’m powerful, thank you very much.”
While people had slowly started warming up to Yoko, it was too late, as today public opinion for Yoko Ono stands between those who still believe that she broke up the Beatles and those who think that she was treated unfairly and was a victim of racism and sexism at the time, making Yoko Ono an urban legend of sorts, an elusive mystery which may never truly unravel.
Do you think Yoko Ono was responsible for breaking up The Beatles?
