25 Years of Satya

Satya, released 25 years ago, is a crime thriller that portrays the realistic and gritty nature of criminal life in Mumbai during the 1990s.
Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, it also marked Anurag Kashyap's breakthrough as a co-writer after his experience with small-scale TV shows.

Starring J. D. Chakravarthy (as Satya), Manoj Bajpayee (as Bhiku Mhatre), Shefali Shah (as Pyari Mhatre), Urmila Matondkar (as Vidya), Saurabh Shukla (as Kallu Mama) and more; a movie which opened to barely 20 people is now considered one of the greatest Indian crime thriller films.
Similar to The Godfather, a film that portrays the protagonist's descent from innocence despite his family's attempts to preserve it, Satya doesn't merely revolve around crime; instead, it delves into the themes of ambition, brotherhood, and violence.
Born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Ram Gopal Varma would regularly skip college to watch films. He would repeatedly watch select films, analyzing scenes that piqued his interest, which he considered his way of learning the art of film direction.
He made connections in the film industry through his video rental shop in Hyderabad, which got him the opportunity to direct the 1989 cult film Siva.
In 1998, Satya gave him a worldwide audience, and critics acknowledged him as the father of Mumbai Noir; a style of film noir with an Indian context.
What sets Satya apart is its portrayal of the underworld, devoid of clichés and glamour, capturing the gritty and brutal nature of crime in the city.
The soundtrack of Satya, composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, is another defining element of the film's impact and success. Songs like "Sapne Mein Milti Hai" and "Goli Maar" became instant hits.
The background score further adds to the tension and drama, synchronizing with the on-screen events like the meeting of Bhiku and Satya, the killings of Gurunarain, police encounters etc.
Satya paved the way for a fresh wave of filmmakers who embraced realism and unconventional narratives. It inspired a generation of directors to explore diverse and unexplored themes, breaking away from the formulaic approach.
