Rock Singer-Songwriter: Alluri | Artist Shoutout

The name might not strike a chord immediately, though he has played at NH7 and also has his vinyl albums sold at The Revolver Club. But he’s got a musical talent which he is very passionate about, so much so that The Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock followed him to India. 

Alluri Shriram, known as Alluri, has made a name for himself in the international music arena as a songwriter, composer, who now splits his time between Italy, India, and the UK. Alluri was about 17, when he went to England, where he did a Bachelors in Music Technology, a course that never had anything to do with singing, writing or playing, it was always recording in a studio and sound setup. It was only when he finished his Master’s degree in 2011 that he started to write.

His sound blends a host of styles and influences from across the globe. A diarist to his core, Alluri’s debut album ‘Man of Truth’ wrote itself during a six-month travel break between completing his Masters in Finland and returning home to India. 

Though his forte is English, he wrote an album in Telugu out of love of his mother tongue. He has worked with Grammy award winning producer Tommaso Colliva on the single Evari Kosam from the album ‘O Katha: Tales of This Telugu Man’ (2018). This is the first time a Telugu album was recorded in Italy, using Italian session musicians and played live to audience internationally. His music features vocals in his native language Telugu which breaks away from English and carves a niche for himself.

In March 2020, Alluri completed his third untitled album when he was stuck in Wales and London during the Corona virus pandemic working with Glen Mattlock and guitarist Earl Slick (guitarist for David Bowie and John Lennon). “Having both these artists on my album was a very fulfilling experience for me” says Alluri on a telephonic chat from Hyderabad. On his return home, he’s presently working on the final touches to the album cover and music videos. He’s also working on a Tollywood project and script writing.
