Man With The Golden Voice: Gary Lawyer | Spinout With Verus Ferreira

Often called the 'man with the golden voice', he is regarded as the finest Indian artiste in the field of western popular music. A bass baritone, who sings just as easily in the tenor range, Gary Lawyer is equally comfortable with every genre of music - be it rock, pop, jazz, country or folk.
His varied musical influences include Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Bon Jovi, U2 and the legendary Jim Morrison, to whom his voice is often compared in texture and phrasing.
A classically trained voice, Gary began his singing career in New York during his stay there in the 80's, singing at showcase theatres and nightclubs to a tremendous response. Just as he started gaining recognition as a singer / composer, personal circumstances forced him to return to India.
Lawyer has done loads of advertising jingles and has also released a couple albums on unwilling record labels who were scared to release English albums. So you had his first album 'This Cannot Wait' (on vinyl), 'High Standards' (with Louiz Banks), 'The Other Side of Dawn' that catapulted Gary to the heights of stardom and made him a household name, followed by 'Arrow in the Dust', ‘Unbelong’ and his last release ‘Heaven’s Child’.
Going back in time, Gary’s first recording was the beautiful country song ocmposed and sung as a duet with his wife Anita. The song We Were Both so Young was featured on a country compilation album ‘Country Superstars’, with country greats like Kenny Rogers, Anne Murray.
Gary also released ‘best of Gary Lawyer – Nights on Fire’ that contained 16 of his finest collection, from the unforgettable Nights on Fire, The Other side of Dawn, Indian Summer, to the loud and rocky She’s all Mine, all songs packed with amazing guitar riffs. There’s also Riding, a song directed at Gary’s love for riding bikes and Save the Tiger a campaign against poaching tigers.
The Parsi born singer, who would rather stay out of Bollywood, succumbed to its calling, when he lent his vocals to just one track till date Road Pe in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Road’ (2002).
